If you have an unlocked iPhone you will be able to use its EDGE connection to access the internet on your laptop.  Lifehacker has a very long article about on how to do it.  I won’t waste your time by trying to show you since I neither have an iPhone or a Mac, it is easier to do if you own a Mac… I think.
